JULY 26 - Discipling Women Struggling with Past Painby Sherry Allchin
Sherry will go deep into helping women who have been deeply hurt (sexual, physical, verbal abuse, betrayal, abandonment, etc.) When helping a woman who has been deeply hurt in her past there may be a cluster of behavioral issues that have roots in the pain of her past. While these problems are real and must be addressed, the root issue is much deeper. She must find her true identity in Christ alone as she becomes the godly woman she was meant to be.

When we counsel a woman who has been deeply hurt in her past (sexual, physical, or verbal abuse, betrayal, abandonment, etc.) there may be a cluster of behavioral issues that have roots in the pain of her past. She is more likely to come in for the eating disorder than for the unresolved hurts of the past. To deal only with the eating disorder invites her just to swap one sinful behavior for another. She may then begin to self-mutilate. When that is dealt with, she may turn to prescription drugs or street drugs and alcohol. She may become very critical of others and never trust or develop a close relationship with another person again.

While these presentation problems are real and must be addressed, the root issue is much deeper, very deep in her heart. She may be clinging to idols of her heart, consumed with anger and bitterness, or she may be paralyzed with anxiety or OCD. She may be desperate for intimacy, yet afraid of marriage because she doesn’t understand true intimacy either vertically or horizontally. In this two-part workshop you will learn how to truly help her put her life back together in a way that honors God. She must find her true identity in Christ alone as she becomes the godly woman she was meant to be. She will need to develop life skills she likely missed while trying to avoid or hide the reality of her sexual trauma. As she makes those new skills the active default in her life, she can move beyond her past and flourish in her present though Christ.

For pastors, counselors, and lay-people seeking to biblically help others or to be helped!
